SK Telecom Reduces Mobile Call Rates
1998.01.26SK Telecom(President: Jung Uck Seo) announced that it is cutting the mobile call rates beginning February 1 to lessen the financial burden on household and business users by helping reduce their communication costs. Following are the changes to be incorporated in the new rate system.
[Lower Business Rates]
To make the services more affordable to business users, SK Telecom will cut the rates by 18.4 percent on average.
[Family Rates To Be Introduced]
If an incumbent user signs up for another number under the same name, a discout in initial subscription fee(20,000 won, instead of 70,000 won) is given and family rates which give large discounts in the monthly usage fees are applied. Users with two to four numbers can ask for a combined billing to receive the family rate discounts for the one number of their choice.
[Free Call Time To Be Extended For The Premium Rate Users]
Free call time given to the users billed by the premium rates will be increased from 270 minutes now to 350 minutes by 80 minutes. The basic and usage fee rates will remain the same but thanks to the extended free call minutes, the users will be able to save 9,120 won(discounts not applied) per month. The premium rates are for users with long call hours.
[Discounts For Long-term Customers]
The discount rates for long-term users for domestic calls will be expanded and the eligibility standards will be eased so that a greater number of users will benefit from the discount system. Especially the eased standards will allow additional 700,000 users to be eligible for the lower charges.
[Sori-sam Service To Be Offered Free Of Charge]
Presently, SK Telecom is offering 20-plus enhanced services free of charge. Enhancing the consumer benefits further, SK Telecom will offer its Sori-sam service, now provided at a 1,500 won(1 dollar) monthly rate, with no charges. Incoming call transfer and automatic call routing services, now offered in a bundle with Sori-sam service will be charged separately at a monthly rate of 900 won. The service will continue to be offered free of charge to the premium rate and business rate users. The company also said that it will reduce the temporary service suspension charge from the 50% of the monthly basic fee(9,000 won - 6 dollars - per month) to 3,000 won(2 dollars).
As for the reasons for the introduction of the new rate system, SK Telecom said that it expects its new system to kick off industry-wide efforts to help the economy cope with the current economic crisis.
