In Seoul and Inchon from October 1 for the first time in the World
To expand the service to 79 major cities by next year
To deliver joint service with Shinsegi Telecom through network interoperation
SK Telecom introduces commercial cdma2000 1x service in Seoul and Inchon starting October 1 for the first time in the world.
The largest mobile operator in Korean said on September 29 that through the new service, it would be able to provide 144Kbps high-speed data service and support various multimedia contents.
A ceremony to announce the official launch of the service is scheduled to be held in SK Telecom? Borame Building on October 2. SK Telecom President Jung Nam Cho, Shinsegi Telecom President Dae Ki Kim, high-level officials from the Ministry of Information and Communication, and representatives of the equipment suppliers such as Samsung Electronics Company (SEC) and Lucent Technologies will be attending the ceremony.
At the ceremony, the company will demonstrate various multimedia services, says a company official. The demonstration will include hooking up a handset to a notebook computer and downloading a video file at 144Kbps, two to ten times faster than the existing services, maintaining video of LAN-quality.
He also said, ?SK Telecom will expand the network to 23 major cities including Pusan and Taegu before the end of the year, and invest additional 500 billion won next year to make the service available in 79 cities nationwide.?
He added, ?In addition to high-speed wireless data service currently available, we are planning to introduce a new handset model that has VOD/AOD-enabling features, which will allow users to download and play television, movies, music videos and MP3 files.?
The official said that coinciding with the launch of the commercial cdma2000 1x service, the company would supply the SK Telecom stores with the MSM5000-chip-enabled flip-style SKY handsets by SK Teletech that allow 144Kbps high-speed data transmission starting September 30. Each handset would be available to users at 400,000 won. The usage charges will be the same and a total of 20,000 units will become available during October.
He said that the company would also offer services jointly with Shinsegi Telecom through network interoperation and the SK Telecom-Shinsegi service would become available coinciding with the introduction of new handsets.
SK Telecom has been testing network interoperability in the Seoul Metropolitan Area from September 1 using the equipment provided by SEC, and conducted successful field tests using SK Teletech?s cdma2000 1x handsets.
