Press Release
Company pursues 4 strategic business areas (networks, platforms, terminals and enablers).
These mainstay lines are in step with a new business environment.
On January 8, SK Telecom announced aggressive steps to respond to a telecommunications industry being led by IMT-2000, M-commerce and globalization. Corporate plans call for concentration on core businesses such as platforms and enablers. In addition, the company aims to ’maximize corporate value’ in 2001 by dividing activities into four strategic areas ? networks, platforms, terminals and enablers.
As for networks, value will be raised by moving from the conventional voice-centered business model to one based on multi-interface. This goal will be pursued by (1) establishing business strategies that promote efficiency, (2) concentrating on the development of value-added services based on both wireline and wireless networks, and (3) strengthening the customer base by building a customer relations management system. In addition, SK Telecom will enhance network competitiveness through upgrades, and new services using multi-interface such as integrated billing will be introduced to increase value.
The platform business model will build on SK Telecom?s competitiveness in the wireless area to create a comprehensive package that includes wireline, broadcasting and media platforms. In this connection, SK Telecom plans to upgrade services through tie-ups with leading domestic and foreign service providers.
Meanwhile, wireless platform competitiveness will be bolstered by offering distinctive wireless services to the existing customer base. These services will be linked to a wide range of other services that customers need such as e-commerce.
At the same time, SK Telecom plans to strengthen strategic alliances with contents providers to acquire the best content quality possible.
Plans for the terminal business include maintaining competitiveness through licensing and equity investments. This move requires stronger relations with prospective small- and medium-sized enterprises.
SK Telecom will take advantage of its mobile business strengths to enter the enabler business, centering on financial services. The company?s existing customer base will serve as the springboard into electronic billing presentation and payment (EBPP), V-cash and other finance areas. The payment infrastructure business (ID confirmation, gateways, etc.) will also be pursued, according to an SK Telecom spokesperson.
Note (1): Networks are the channels for conveying content such as cellular services, paging services, line leasing and specially designated communications services.
Note (2): The platform business packages the wireless platform with integrated wireline portals and other contents.
Note (3): Terminals are handsets.
Note (4): Broadcasting and communication industry enablers support the process of providing customers with value. They include credit cards, payment and billing, e-cash, online security and ID authentication.
