SK Telecom awarded at the Global Telecoms Awards for its breakthrough media technology

SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM) was globally recognized for its self-developed media services.
On November 9, SK Telecom announced that it won the award for ‘Content Matters’ at the Global Telecoms Awards held in London, UK on November 8.
The Global Telecoms Awards is an award ceremony hosted by Informa, a global ICT research center, which it selects the greatest telecommunication operators by sector. It is a ceremony to honor companies that have achieved innovative results in 14 categories, including telecommunication service, infrastructure, security, and AI.
The award-winning service that SK Telecom was acknowledged for this time is ‘oksusu Social VR’. In October this year, SK Telecom and SK Broadband jointly commercialized this unique service that combines the social community and ‘oksusu’, a mobile over-the-top (OTT) service.
By simply wearing a VR headset, this innovation that allows up to eight users to watch video content such as sports and movies, while engaging in conversations as if they are right next to each other.
Once 5G is commercialized, ‘oksusu Social VR’ will offer 8K UHD video, which boasts 16 times better resolution than full HD. In addition, SK Telecom is planning to activate additional features including games, commerce and advertisements that can connect the virtual and actual world.
“’oksusu Social VR’ is an iconic service developed by SK Telecom using T real platform based on AR/VR technologies,” said Lee Jong-min, Senior Vice President and Head of Media Technology R&D Center of SK Telecom. “Based on our accumulated knowledge, we will strive to lead innovative media services in the 5G era.”
