This is the first cooperative agreement signed between a Chinese and foreign company since China adopted the CDMA standard
SK Telecom agrees to provide training and technical support for building a commercial CDMA network
The two partners will seek other joint projects in the future such as wireless text data networks
SK Telecom has become the first foreign company to enter a cooperative arrangement with a local Chinese company for a project related to the construction of China?s CDMA networks.
SK Telecom President Pyo Moon-soo and China Unicom Chairman Yang Xianzu and other ranking officials from both companies took part in the signing ceremony in Beijing on March 3. According to the agreement, ?The two companies will work together to quickly complete the construction of China Unicom?s commercial CDMA system, upgrade the cdma2000 1X system and develop new business areas and value-added services.?
The agreement maps out the principles and concrete approaches to be taken for the project. That is, SK Telecom will consult on and help with the construction and operation of China Unicom?s CDMA network.
The two partners have also formed a joint working group to help ensure that their cooperative efforts proceed smoothly. The group will engage in regular personnel exchanges such as meetings, and new areas slated for cooperation include wireless text data networks.
China Unicom is scheduled to complete construction of a network capable of serving ten million subscribers this year. By working with China Unicom on this project, SK Telecom expects to use its extensive CDMA operation technology and know-how build multi-faceted cooperative relationships in the Chinese communications market.
President Pyo said, Many companies from around the world are eager to break into the Chinese CDMA market. The conclusion of this agreement, the first for any foreign company, means that SK Telecom is recognized for its technological strength.?
SK Telecom and China Unicom began searching for ways to work together back in June 1999, when the chairmen of both companies sat down for a meeting. They exchanged agreements related to comprehensive cooperation in February of 2000, followed by the signing of an international roaming service contract last September
