Library menu and electronic books offered through wireless n.TOP service.
Over 1,000 books on various subjects can be downloaded.
SK Telecom launched an ?Electronic Library? service accessible via wireless online connections on March 12. Users who log onto the n.TOP website can search for book titles and download the ?electronic? books of their choosing into their wireless phones. The book contents can then be called up anytime and anyplace.
A key feature of the n.TOP e-Library is a menu that facilitates searches by systematically organizing the available titles according to topic or genre: (1) Best Sellers/Newly Published Books, (2) Epic Tales/Mysteries/ Fantasies, (3) Movies/Dramas/Fan Fic.1, (4) Business/ Management/Training, (5) Korean Literature, (6) World Classics, (6) Religion, and (7) Adult Literature.
The e-books offered by n.TOP are read via an electronic book viewer that was developed based on a virtual game machine2. The viewer can download 50 kilobytes of data (40-50 pages) of a book at once. Thus, the average novel can be read in its entirety after just five downloads.
The e-book selection is extensive, from heroic Chinese tales, to religious materials and adult novels. Users can also get condensed versions of foreign books that have yet to be published in Korea. The ?Multimedia Poetry? section lets users enjoy poems while watching background images and listening to music. Available bestsellers include Chung Chan-yong?s ?Don?t Study English? and a work by Chung on English study methods that has been exclusively compiled for online use. The long-running bestseller ?Scent of Chrysanthemums? can also be purchased in installments.
Initially, over 300 volumes in more than 1,700 installments were available. The menu is being expanded to over 1000 volumes in more than 5,000 installments by the end of March.
Various value-added features are offered for the e-book users? convenience, including a bookmark function, table of contents, page-turning function and background lighting. The chare for downloading each installment ranges between 200 won and 500 won.
Notes: (1) Fan Fic.: a literary genre on popular entertainers designed especially for web surfers.
(2) The virtual game machine is a unique software download program for mobile handsets. It was co-developed by SK Telecom and Shinji Soft last year.
