Four Korean mobile communications companies will begin international roaming service with China Unicom from this coming December.
Six more companies in the Asia-Pacific, including KDDI, Hutchison Telecom and Sprint, will also take part.
Four Korean mobile service providers (SK Telecom, SK Shinsaege Telecomm, Korea Telecom Freetel and LG Telecom) exchanged memoranda of understanding with China Unicom Horizon Telecommunication to begin offering an international roaming service from this December. The MOUs were signed in a ceremony held at the Hong Kong Convention Center on June 14.
China Unicom Horizon Telecommunication is a subsidiary of China Unicom, that nation?s second largest mobile operator. The company signed contracts with six CDMA system manufacturers, including Samsung Electronics of Korea, in May. From December, Horizon is scheduled to begin offering CDMA mobile services in China.
With the international two-way roaming agreement in place, Korean mobile service subscribers can use their handsets and phone numbers in China.
