SKT signs MOU with Qualcomm for technical cooperation, personnel exchanges.
SK Telecom was the world?s first to commercialize
cdma2000-1x service, and now the company is preparing to demonstrate its technology leadership once again. On June 18, SKT officials announced plans to launch commercial cdma2000-1xEV-DO (Evolution-Data Only) service by May 2002, prior to the opening of the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup. The cdma2000-1xEVDO can transmit data at 2.4Mbps, at least ten times faster than cdma2000-1x can.
To carry out this ambitious project, SK Telecom will select an equipment provider by this September and complete network installation in the first quarter of next year. Commercial cdma2000-1xEV-DO service will then be launched in 26 Korean cities before the World Cup opening ceremony in May.
On June 18, SK Telecom President Pyo Moon-soo and Qualcom President Jeff Jacobs signed memoranda of understanding to cooperate on personnel exchanges and technology related to cdma2000-1xEV-DO. Regarding the MOU signing, SKT Network Business division Chief Kim Il-joong said, ?SK Telecom will work closely with Qualcomm, which possess basic CDMA technology, so that we can offer our customers high-speed wireless data services of the best possible quality.?
Unlike wireless voice services, cdma2000?1xEV-DO operates a channel that is dedicated to text data transmission, allowing users to receive data as fast as 2.4Mbps and to send data at up to 153.6Kbps. As a result
SK Telecom service subscribers will be able to receive wireless multi-media-based broadband services such as video on demand.
