On February 20th, 2002, SK Telecom (www.sktelecom.com) announced the launch of a new concept Telematics service (Footnote 1) called ?NATE Drive? designed to serve vehicle drivers.
?NATE Drive? is an interactive communication service that guides drivers to the safest and most convenient roads through voice and graphics. Unlike existing Navigation Services, this service gathers and analyzes the changing traffic situations on a real time basis through a Global Positioning System (GPS) that uses a satellite and wireless
network to provide drivers with the fastest and safest routes to their destination.
In addition, NATE Drive is an integrated wired and wireless service that gives drivers real time traffic information via the VMT when they register their destination or other specific places, on the wired NATE Drive website.
Starting February 20th, SK Telecom will provide the following services through the NATE Drive Service:
Fastest and safest road guide, real time traffic information, location information such as gas stations, restaurants, etc. Daily information, such as news, stock trading, weather forecasting, golf, etc. will also be provided. Moreover, there will be complete ERS (Emergency Road Service) for any road emergency such as requesting ambulances, wreckers, etc.
In order to use this service, customers must have the VMT and Navigation Kit. They can buy these from SK Telecom sales agencies nationwide, and install them in any model vehicle.
NATE Drive Service fees consist of a data usage fee and an information usage fee. The data usage fee is charged in accordance with the existing packet fee plan, and the information usage fee is 20,000 Korean won per month. In the near future SK Telecom will offer a wide range of fee plans that satisfy our customers? diverse needs.
SK Telecom will furnish the NATE Drive Service via PDA or LCD monitor during this year, in cooperation with ?entrack? of SK Corporation. The service via LCD allows users to get moving image traffic information by CCTV. This service also enables such services as vehicle diagnosis, vehicle safety information, Internet connection, and TV watching, among others.
Sung-Kyun Park, head of Portal Business Division of SK Telecom said ?We will enlarge our market share to vehicle carriers in an early stage of the service, and have a goal of securing 250,000 subscribers during this year, and 1.2 million subscribers by 2005?.
SK Telecom has now completed NATE service, a wired and wireless integrated service, by launching the NATE Drive service, following the launch of NATE service for PDA and wired portal NATE.Com service.
