Asynchronous IMT-2000 pilot service will be launched in Seoul and Boondang City by the second quarter of 2003.
By 2005, SK IMT will provide this service in 81 cities throughout the country through investing 1.6 trillion Korean won.
On February 22nd 2002, SK IMT (President: Young Soo Kang) opened public hearings for 200 shareholders in International Conference Room of SK Telecom?s Green Building. In the public hearings, he explained to the interested shareholders, the current status of business preparation, and launching schedule for the asynchronous IMT-2000 service. He also disclosed that asynchronous IMT-2000 pilot service will be launched in Seoul and Boondang City by the second quarter of 2003, and full commercial service will begin in Seoul, 6 metropolitan cities and 25 other cities by the third quarter of 2003.
By 2005 the company plans to expand its service area to 81 cities throughout the country as well as major counties by investing 1.6 trillion Korean won.
To this end, last November SK IMT selected Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Nortel, and Alcatel, among others for the development of switching and base station equipment. The company will have completed the first developmental tests that ensure basic function by this coming July and the second developmental test of interconnection with existing network and service interpretability, by this coming November.
Young Soo Kang, president of SK IMT said ?SK IMT has not specifically analyzed a merger with SK Telecom, and will decide after taking various factors and shareholder?s opinions into consideration?. He also clearly stated ?The company never considered the change of technology mode that is being raised as such a hot issue?.
