On February 25th, 2002, CDMA2000 1xEV-DO service began. This service will be expanded to 26 cities by April 2002.
SK Telecom (www.sktelecom.com) announced the launch of commercial synchronized IMT-2000 service (CDMA2000 1xEV-DO) with 800MHz bandwidth in Seoul, on February 25th, 2002.
Commercial synchronized IMT-2000 service allows users to transmit high-speed data at a maximum 2.4Mbps. This service also provides wireless multimedia services such as VOD/Animation, Photo Mail, and Internet connection while moving, among others.
Users can enjoy this service by using a PCMCIA-type terminal that is an exclusive terminal for wireless data communication. The PCMCIA-type terminal should be inserted in a notebook computer or PDA. By this coming April, a mobile phone terminal will be introduced and by May, VOD and Video Phone terminals will also be introduced to the market.
SK Telecom has completed the construction of a network of synchronized IMT-2000 service (CDMA2000 1xEV-DO) of 800MHz bandwidth in all areas of Seoul last January and implemented field optimization as well as system optimization in the beginning of February this year. Therefore, the commercial service will be launched by the end of February as scheduled.
Beginning last February, SK Telecom started building the network in 26 cities nationwide, including 10 cities where the World Cup Games will be held (Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, etc.) The company plans to complete the network construction by March, and then start launching the commercial service in April after the field and system optimization has been done for one month.
