Press Release
On April 19th 2001, SK Telecom (www.sktelecom.com) and KDDI (www.kddi.com) reached a CDMA automatic roaming service agreement at SK Telecom?s Head Office. This roaming service allows users to make cellular phone calls with their original numbers and handsets in both Korea and Japan. SK Telecom also concluded the CDMA automatic roaming service agreement with NTT DoCoMo in November of last year.
As a result, SK Telecom cellular subscribers can selectively use the network of either KDDI or NTT DoCoMo for roaming service when they visit Japan. Through this agreement, KDDI launched the roaming service using SK Telecom?s cellular network last May. SK Telecom plans to start the service using KDDI?s cellular network by the end of this month when the development of the roaming handset will be completed.
? The Milestones in Korea-Japan Automatic Roaming Service
-In April 2000, Shinsegi Telecomm and KDDI launched Korea- Japan automatic roaming service:
For this roaming service, SANYO of Japan developed a roaming handset (Model: C111SA) and supplied these handsets to Shinsegi Telecomm cellular subscribers of Korea and KDDI cellular subscribers of Japan (There have been 10,000 handsets sold in Korea and 60,000 handsets sold in Japan).
- In September 2001, KDDI started selling a folder type handset (Model: C401SA) to KDDI cellular subscribers (Sold 40,000 handsets to date).
- Samsung Electronics developed a Korea-Japan automatic roaming handset (Model: SCH-X600) and will supply them to SK Telecom cellular subscribers beginning in May of this year. Basically the Korea-Japan automatic roaming was the first roaming service for SK Telecom subscribers.
? SK Telecom subscribers (011 & 017) are now allowed to use automatic roaming service in all of the world?s CDMA service regions, including the U.S. and China with their own cellular number and handset. However, they need special dual-band roaming handsets in Japan due to the difference in the frequency bands between Korea and Japan. With this dual-band handset, subscribers can use automatic roaming service in all countries in which SK Telecom reached roaming service agreements.
? The significance of Korea-Japan Automatic Roaming Service
- The demand for cellular communication of SK Telecom and KDDI is expected to greatly increase during the 2002 World Cup. In this regard, the two companies will provide automatic roaming service with subscribers? original cellular handsets and numbers in both Korea and Japan.
- Japan places great importance on the number of inbound and outbound passengers (Inbound Passengers: 20%, Outbound Passengers: 46%). SK Telecom subscribers (011 & 017) will receive equal cellular service benefits in Japan and in Korea with their original cellular handsets and numbers.
