Korea China CDMA automatic roaming service will be launched in early May of this year for SK Telecom subscribers (011/017).
The two companies concluded an agreement to provide wireless Internet service in both Korea and China before the 2002 World Cup.
They also agreed to demonstrate video phone and VOD services in both Korea and China during the 2002 World Cup.
"With my own original cellular number and handset I can make a call in China" At 9:00 a.m. on April 9th, 2002 at SK Telecom Head Office, Moon Soo Pyo, president of SK Telecom (www.sktelecom.com), and Wang Jian Zhou, chairman of China Unicom signed a cooperative business agreement to activate wireless Internet and CDMA automatic roaming services in both Korea and China during the 2002 World Cup. They also agreed to launch Task Force Teams for these businesses.
As a result of the agreement, SK Telecom subscribers (011/017) can make cellular calls in China with their original cellular number and handset that they used in Korea, starting in May of this year. They are allowed to use this service without using SIM cards or cellular handset renting procedures. They will also enjoy lower call tariffs compared to existing rental roaming services.
In early May of this year, this automatic roaming service will start in 7 provinces in China (Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzou, Kwangzou, Kunming, Urumuchi, and Hainandao). Its service area will be expanded across China as the CDMA network is built before the 2002 World Cup. In order to use the Korea-China CDMA automatic roaming service, subscribers should visit SK Telecom branch offices nationwide, or International Roaming Centers at Incheon / Kimhae International Airports or Leaders Club Lounges at the two International Airports, and make the simple application procedure before they leave Korea.
In addition to the convenience, the automatic roaming service is much more economical than conventional rental roaming services or SIM card type automatic roaming services, saving rental fees and the daily usage fees of roaming handsets. Moreover, the call usage fee is economical. Therefore, SK Telecom expects that the usage of this roaming service will grow rapidly in the near future.
On April 8th, 2002, the two companies launched the automatic roaming service for China Unicom?s CDMA subscribers, and a SIM card type automatic roaming service for GSM subscribers who visit Korea. They also agreed to expand the service areas to wireless Internet roaming as well as voice service during the 2002 World Cup. In order to boost the wireless Internet business area, they also agreed to demonstrate video phone and VOD services based on the CDMA2000 1X network in both Korea and China during the 2002 World Cup.
The visiting members of China Unicom including Wang Jian Zhou, chairman of China Unicom, who visited Japan on April 2nd, arrived in Korea on April 8th. They discuss the cooperative plan for the automatic roaming service and wireless Internet business area with SK Telecom. During their stay, they will visit the PR pavilion in SK Telecom’s Network R&D Center in Boondang City.
