Press Release
On April 15th, 2002, SK Telecom (www.sktelecom.com) designated Gimhae, Busan as a cellular call emergency area. Gimhae is the area near Busan in which a Chinese passenger
plane crash occurred.
A Cellular Call Emergency Area is designated by SK Telecom whenever cellular call traffic volume increases drastically, or call quality suddenly gets worse due to any kind of accident, emergency, or disaster. SK Telecom has determined to manage this area in accordance with its Crisis Managemen program.
In this situation, SK Telecom is heavily focusing on managing cellular call quality in the whole Gimhae area, including Gimhae International Airport in Busan.
The designation as a Cellular Call Emergency Area took place at noon on April 15th right after the airplane accident occurred. SK Telecom Network Management Center, and its branch office in Busan, are strictly monitoring the cellular call traffic volume as well as call quality 24 hours a day. Furthermore, in order to prepare for the heavy
congestion in call traffic volume, the company additionally assigned network management staff members to the three base stations that currently cover the call traffic of Gimhae International Airport.
Gimhae International Airport has been categorized as a first degree area of heavy cellular call traffic volume. In ordinary times, SK Telecom?s three base stations (Jinae, Samjung-dong, Abang) manage about 25 thousand calls per hour in the area where the airplane crash occurred. When this area was designated a Cellular Call Emergency Area, SK Telecom prepared for heavy cellular call traffic volume by doubling the capacity of the three base stations. As a result, they can handle more than 50 thousand calls per hour in the emergency area.
Il Jung Kim, head of the Network Business Divisional Group of SK Telecom stated, We expect the cellular call traffic volume will continue to increase during the process of settling the problems created by the accident. For that reason we designated the area as a Cellular Call Emergency Area. We will respond to any changes in the cellular call traffic volume as well as call quality in a rapid and proper manner until full settlement of the airplane accident is completed.
