Press Release
Executed contract worth about 10 million US dollars with Pelephone in Israel to supply NATE Platform.
Proves excellence of Korean technology based on global standards.
Cooperative effort between large-sized national corporations and venture companies has become role model for launching into oversea markets.
SK Telecom (www.sktelecom.com)exports wireless Internet technology developed with national venture companies.
SK Telecom announced conclusion of export deal with Pelephone, an advanced Israeli mobile communication provider, at 8 a.m.(2 p.m. local time) the 30th of April on Telavive in Israel. Under this deal SK Telecom will export about 10 million dollars worth of wireless Internet platform. This will consist of NATE service systems, terminal solutions and content. SK Telecom will provide a turnkey package of the following bundled systems:
NATE portal platforms, including soft and hard ware, ?Gateway solution and multimedia messaging solution from Locus, ?Content download server solution from UAngel, ? Terminal platform SK-VM from XCE, ?Image compression solution from Neo M tel, ?Server maintenance and repair service from HP.
This deal will endow the Pelephone with the latest cutting-edge technology in platform design and installation, system integration and test, among others. After acquiring this technology, and undergoing test training, this coming October Pelephone will be able to provide advanced wireless Internet services such as Melody, Photo mate, multimedia games and a multimedia messaging service.
Man Won Jung, managing director of SK Telecom’s Wireless Internet Department, commented regarding the contract, "One of the most outstanding outcomes from this deal, is that SK Telecom’s wireless Internet technology has proved its competitiveness in the global market by winning this contract in spite of the fierce competition among the world’s best wireless Internet companies that are holding Wireless Internet Terminal standards. This includes such world class companies as I-mode from NTT DoCoMo, Bueru from Qualcomm, and Java from Sun Microsystems".
He also stated, "Although the national venture companies have the world’s best level of technology, they have been unable to advance into the global market due to the lack of a well-known name, overseas sales forces, and capital. This contract will be a good example of the value of cooperative efforts between large-sized major companies and venture companies, when launching into the global market.
Another very significant meaning of this deal, is that it shows that wireless Internet solutions not only allow the making of long term license contracts that bring fixed income, but also will help gain ground in setting the world standards in technology. This will become an extremely important potential direct and indirect income source. That is why this contract will become a new business model in the IT industry in our nation.
On the other hand, Pelephone company, an Israel’s government-owned mobile communication provider, has 1.85 million subscribers and 32% of the market share. This bodes well for the future global reach of SK Telecom. Pelephone first contacted SK Telecom about importing wireless Internet technology in order to improve its competitiveness, in September of last year. Both companies executed the MOU of business cooperation in December, and after three month of discussion, they finalized the contract.
