Two industry leaders align to deliver the NATE wireless Internet platform to overseas markets.
This is the second strategic alliance with a US firm. It follows one with Hewlett-Packard for utilizing HP?s worldwide sales networks in repair and maintenance of NATE platforms.
SK Telecom (www.sktelecom.com) announced a strategic alliance with Openwave (www.openwave.com) of the U.S., for deploying and marketing the NATE wireless Internet platform in overseas markets. To this end, the two companies signed an MOU on May 8th 2002.
Through this strategic alliance, SK Telecom and Openwave reached an agreement to carry out co-marketing of the two companies? own wireless Internet platform solutions, mainly for Asian telecommunication operators, including China and
Taiwan.
In particular, the two companies will focus on co-marketing to about 90 mobile communication carriers worldwide, to which Openwave provides wireless Internet gateway products. At the same time, the companies plan to develop products that combine SK Telecom?s NATE platform with Openwave?s wireless Internet gateway and mobile browsers.
SK Telecom has world-class NATE platform technology and operating know-how, while Openwave keeps more than a 50%~70% market share in the wireless Internet gateway and mobile browser markets throughout the world. It seems that the strategic alliance formed by these two companies will have a great effect on the world?s wireless Internet industry.
?The wireless Internet markets in Korea and Japan are the most active in the world, and its technology is at the world?s highest level. In this regard, "advancing into the overseas markets is expected to succeed? said Hyeon Oh Yoo, managing director of SK Telecom?s Internet Strategic Business Division. ?By commercializing the NATE platform and its service operation know-how, SK Telecom is actively seeking to advance into overseas markets. Openwave, a merged company of ?Phone.Com? and ?Software.Com?, is achieving outstanding performance in the fields of wireless Internet-based communication software and its application. This global company occupies more than a 50%~70% share in the wireless Internet gateway and mobile browser markets.
In April 2002, SK Telecom announced the conclusion of an export deal with Pelephone, an advanced Israeli mobile communication provider. Under this deal, SK Telecom will supply about 10 million US dollars worth of wireless Internet platform. In addition, the company has formed a strategic alliance with Hewlett-Packard for utilizing HP?s worldwide sales networks in repair and maintenance of NATE platforms being supplied in overseas countries. These efforts show SK Telecom?s strong intention to extend the NATE platform business into overseas markets.
