?Using my own original cellular number and handset, I can easily make a call in the U.S.?
In the afternoon on May 21st, 2002 at the Verizon Wireless Roaming Center in New Jersey, SK Telecom(www.sktelecom.com) and Verizon Wireles (www.verizonwireless.com) held a ceremony celebrating the launching of automatic roaming service, both in Korea and the U.S.

The two companies, the largest mobile communication operators in Korea and the U.S., have about 46 million subscribers (SK Telecom: 16 million, Verizon Wireless: 30 million). This opens the era of a single mobile communication belt between Korea and the U.S.
In order to use this service, the cellular handsets that are used in Korea require a NAM setting that allows the handset to receive Verizon Wireless?s frequency. This transforms a frequency channel in the handset. When U.S. customers visit Korea for the first time, they should visit the SK Telecom International Roaming Center, or Leaders Club Lounge, located in International Airports or branch
Offices throughout the country to receive the NAM setting service. Once customers have set the NAM in their cellular handsets, they can simply operate the handset on their own for the roaming service when they visit Korea subsequent
times. For detailed roaming guide service, please call 566-2011. However, the NAM setting in some old model handsetsis not available. Therefore, U.S. customers should make sure whether they can use roaming service in the U.S.
through their handset model.
When SK Telecom customers make cellular calls in the U.S., they press area code and phone number for local calls and international call carriers? number, country code, area code and phone number for international calls. When making
calls between 011 / 017 subscribers in the U.S., they press the number in the same way they make calls in Korea.
The usage rate for the automatic roaming service is 585 Korean won per minute for calls inside the U.S. and 1,753 won per minute when making international calls to Korea. The rate for receiving calls from Korea is 902 won per minute according to the official billing system of the U.S (based on 1,330 Korean won per 1 US$ dollar). This automatic roaming service is much more economical than conventional rental roaming services because users do not have to pay a subscription fee and daily rental fee. Its service usage rate is 50% lower than that of existing
rental roaming services.
Beginning on May 23rd, 2002, this automatic roaming service will start in 19 major cities in the U.S. (New York, LA, San Francisco, Washington DC, Chicago, Boston, Las Vegas, Honolulu, etc.). Next the service area will be expanded across the U.S. as the Verizon Wireless CDMA network is built before the end of 2002. At the same time, Verizon Wireless subscribers who visit Korea, can use the automatic roaming service throughout the areas of the country, in which SK Telecom provides cellular service.
?With this automatic roaming service, the conventional inconveniences faced by customers who visit between Korea and the U.S., will be greatly improved. Besides the roaming service, SK Telecom is cooperating with Verizon Wireless in starting a wireless data roaming service as soon as possible" said Il Won Lim, head of SK Telecom?s Segment Marketing Division. Furthermore, Tony Melone, vice-president of Verizon Wireless, stated ?I am very pleased that 30 million Verizon Wireless customers can enjoy outstanding automatic roaming service in Korea during the World Cup? We will further expand our cooperative ties to the wireless Internet area as well?, he added.
