Press Release
The Asai Newspaper in Japan reported that KDDI and SK Telecom are joining forces by linking together their Cellular Phone Streaming Video Transmission Service
This SK Telecom(www.sktelecom.com)-KDDI(www.kddi.com) joint effort will be ready to give unsurpassed MMS from both Korea and Japan during the World Cup Games. This will be a world’s first for such a combined service when it is initiated on the 28th of May 2002.
This service from the two companies is the first stage of a linked MMS service that allows subscribers to send and receive ’Phone Mail Service’ between Korea and Japan that transmits frozen images captured by a digital camera attached to a cellular phone .
With this service, the customers of SK Telecom and KDDI can send and receive vivid images to each other at any time. This cooperation in communication by two prominent companies in the mobile communication industry, will positively contribute toward further friendly interchange between the two countries as they jointly host the World Cup.
Last September, for the first time in the world, SK Telecom introduced a ?Photo Mail Service? supporting the 3GPP(3G Partnership Project: Instituting of 3G Specification Standards) that takes the picture images from a camera attached to a cellular phone and transmits them over a cellular phone connection. This service has already proved its commercial feasibility through having more than 500 thousand customers in Korea.
When SK Telecom’s subscribers send Photo Mail to KDDI subscribers, they can simply put the e-mail address which is given on the KDDI subscriber’s cellular phone in the "Receiver" column, and then send it. On the other hand, the KDDI subscribers have to put the SK Telecom subscriber’s cellular phone number plus ?Domain Name? as the e-mail address, and then send it.
In addition, both companies are discussing the possibility of linking a streaming video image mail service based on MPEG-4 by the end of this year as a follow-up service to the linked frozen image transmitting service. This would be another world’s first for these two progressive companies.
At the current time, 6 models of the cellular phones that can send ?Phone Mail? are IM-3100, IM-5000 from SK Teletech, X-270,X-290, X-590 from Samsung Electronics, and SD-1020 from LG Electronics. All of the cellular phones (including black and white, 4 Gray) that use the wireless Internet can send and receive ?Phone Mail"
The two companies also introduced cellular phones that support dual band(dual frequency such as SCH-X600, Sanyo C111SA), and also have started automatic roaming service in which customers can use their own cellular phone and numbers used in both countries.
