Press Release
Using GPS Technology, this service is provided with streaming video images on a large monitor installed at hotels.
An Urban Bus Location Service provided by cellular phone will be introduced in June 2002.
No more senseless waiting for the bus passengers at bus stops for buses that might, or might not, show up on time?
On the third of June 2002, SK Telecom (www.sktelecom.com) announced the start of ?Bus Alarm? service as part of the LBS (Location Based Service) in the Metropolitan areas through the Mobile BIS (Bus Information System) which is utilizes the GPS(Global Positioning System).
The company has already begun the Bus Information and Location Service by installing large PDP (Plasma Display Panels) at the Seoul Palace Hotel (located in Kangnam District) for foreign guests who visit Korea, as well as national guests who are not familiar with the urban bus system.
Additionally, in the middle of June, with their cellular phone connected to NATE service, SK Telecom’s customers can use this service to get all kinds of essentially needed bus information. This includes such things as the name of the bus stop it is currently located at, and remaining distance and number of bus stops before it will reach the target stop.
After July, when the ?Bus Alarm? begins to be commercialized, the company will continually expand available routes in Metropolitan areas for the service, including routes of general bus, seated bus, and airport bus.
SK Corp. provides ?Bus Alarm? service by first gathering information with GPS transportation information control system that is installed on the buses and at the transportation company to generate bus location information, then processing this through Mobile Location Information Technology.
At the second part of this year, BIS which is a highly valued service by local self-governing bodies, will be available on a wireless system enabled by the urban traffic information analyzing system by SK Corp.
In addition, through the streaming video image of PDP which is installed at the hotels, hotel guests can get useful information, such as World Cup news, tourist information, and other new advanced services through a cutting-edge IT solution, as well as bus location/information. It can be a contributing factor in increasing gross income for the hotels.
SK Telecom also predicts that PDP will carry the role of a new media channel on top of serving the bus information, so we will keep expanding its service areas to cover many other hotels beyond the 5 star hotels.
