Press Release
Built first test-bed based on CDMA 2000 1X, EV-DO, and NATE Platforms.
Provided ’Technology Certification’ to national and international equipment manufacturers that passed the real acclimation to environment test.
Conducted the first certification tests on ’PDSN’ equipment manufactured by Samsung Electronics, Cisco and TAHOE Networks.
On December 11th, SK Telecom announced it has launched into a Test-bed business in which the company issues ’Technology Certification’ to national and international equipment manufacturers. This Test-bed business, which certifies technology for CDMA network equipment, will strongly contribute toward the national and international equipment manufacturers developing next generation services.
SK Telecom provides a test network that is the same as a real mobile communication network for them to test their newly developed services. This Test-bed business, which is being introduced for the first time in Korea, has bright prospects for resolving the serious limitations of test environments for network manufacturers. It will provide high quality finished products with stable and suitable functions tested and certified by SK Telecom.
In starting the Test-bed Business, SK Telecom executed a 450 thousand US dollar Test-bed service contract with TAHOE Networks, Samsung Electronics and Cisco Systems. The service contract signing ceremony was held at the Bundang Network Research Center on the 11th of December. Participants were Myung Seung Lee, head of Network Research Center, Arthur Lin, president of TAHOE Networks, Pil Young Kim, executive director of Samsung Electronics, and Ki Hyen Ju, managing director of Cisco Systems’ Mobile Wireless Group.
The main thrust of the service contract is that SK Telecom will conduct the technology certification test for PDSN (Packet Data Service Node) produced by each of the three companies, then after passing the test, the company allows the attachment of a ’Certification Logo’ issued by SK Telecom on the PDSN Equipment.
The ’PDSN’ equipment which would receive technology certification is the core wireless Internet equipment for transmitting packets. The new PDSN has a capacity 100 times larger than existing equipment, and is equipped with new additional service functions. It also has an added automatic cut-off function when troubles occur in the network.
This PDSN equipment is the most advanced and suitable Carrier Class level PDSN for business providers due to the fact it has been designed to meet SK Telecom’s criteria for functional qualities and technological requirements from the starting point of its development.
To successfully carry out the Test-bed business, SK Telecom has already constructed the same network environment as a real commercial base network at Bundang Network Research Center. This includes CDMA 20001X, EV-DO Network and wireless Internet platform. SK Telecom plans to execute service contracts with other PDSN equipment manufacturers and expand the service not only in CDMA equipment, but also WCDMA equipment through utilizing the Test-bed business.
Myong Seung Lee, head of SK Telecom’s Network Research Center, commented, "Our Test-bed business is the beginning point of an IT Test-bed business which was regarded as a national project till now." "It will actively create new economic profit both inside and outside of Korea through our own self-developed technology. It will also make a huge contribution toward producing powerful synergy effects between future service providers and equipment manufacturers."
? Technological Term: PDSN (Packet Data Service Node) - The equipment makes transmission of packet data on an advance function of the CDMA2000 1X network, allowing interface between radio networks and data networks and connecting directly to the TCP/IP-based Internet.
