Net income of 1.51 trillion Korean won was recorded on total sales of 8.63 trillion won. Net income increased 14% and total sales increased 29% above those of the previous year.
Sales of wireless Internet service increased 147% over last year.
On January 6th, SK Telecom announced that the company achieved a net income of 1.51 trillion won and total sales of 8.63 trillion won for 2002. In addition, ordinary income came to 2.67 trillion won.
SK Telecom’s total sales and net income for 2002 increased 14% and 29% respectively with 7.58 trillion won in sales and 1.17 in net income recorded in 2001. Ordinary income showed a 15% increase over the 2.32 trillion won for the year 2001 (The business results for 2001 were based on the merger with Shinsegi Telecomm).
Despite the reduction in cellular service and interconnection fees implemented on January 1st 2002, the wireless Internet’s monthly average revenue per user (ARPU) increased from 1,776 won to 3,727 won, and the sales of voice cellular service also grew due to the increase in the number of new subscribers (from 3,198 thousand to 4,772 thousand). In addition, monthly average call traffic volume per user (MOU) increased 10 minutes from 180 minutes in 2001 to 190 minutes in 2002 (From January to October). In particular, depreciation cost was reduced by 258 billion won over the previous year through enhanced investment efficiency due to the merger with Shinsegi Telecomm. These are the important factors that explain these remarkable business results in 2002.
Thanks to the increased number of CDMA2000 1X service subscribers (From 2.681 million to 9.937 million), the high penetration ratio of color handsets, and the development of a variety of content, the sales of wireless Internet came to 732.7 billion won, up 147% from the previous year.
"In spite of the fact that new subscriptions to SK Telecom’s ’June’ service (a next generation multi-brand launched in November 2002) was suspended for one month, the number of subscribers to its service increased by 67 thousand subscribers thanks to the development of a wide range of multimedia content and the expansion of June service-enabled handset distribution" said an SK Telecom official.
