Three Mobile Communication Service Providers Held A Public Demonstration of the Commercialization of the Mobile Standard Platform Called
2003.04.29 PrintThe three companies together with the Korean Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) released and demonstrated the WIPI 1.1 version of the technology.
They plan to launch standard platform terminals by June of this year, and agreed to carry out a conventional key content converting project.
The Public Showing of the Commercialization of the Mobile Standard Platform called "WIPI"" was managed by the TTA (Secretary General: Chu-Hwan Yim) and promoted by SK Telecom (President: Moon Soo Pyu), KTF (President: Joong Soo Nam) and LG Telecom (President: Young Nam). It was held at the Convention Center of the Hilton Hotel on May 29th at 10 a.m. This Public Showing was designed to further develop the wireless Internet area by setting the standards for the platform. About 400 people dedicated to the wireless Internet business (such as content providers and terminal manufacturers) participated in the Public Showing.
In the Public Demonstration, there was a booth installed to help explain, and directly demonstrate, the technology that allows users to access wireless Internet content through WIPI 1.1 version-applied terminals.
This drew keen attention from the participants. The three mobile communication service providers formed a "Mobile Standard Platform Commercialization Council" in October of last year, and have developed mutual certification tools and determined the scope of the standards for mutual certification. Furthermore, in an effort to develop compatible technology between mobile communication providers, and commercialize the WIPI, they organized the "Korea Wireless Internet Standard Forum (KISF)". The KISF is composed of the Electronic Telecommunication Research Institute (ETRI), content providers, and solution developers. Previously, content providers and terminal manufacturers had to duplicate their investment in R&D and product lines to meet distinct mobile communication providers’ separate service requirements.
The "WIPI 1.1 Version", that was pronounced to be commercialized at this time, is a next generation "Mobile Standard Platform" that blends the different mobile standard platforms, used by each mobile service provider, into one. This allows subscribers of any mobile service provider to conveniently use the wireless Internet content provided by different mobile service providers. Therefore, the subscribers will have a wide range of choice for the enjoying of wireless content.
The three mobile communication service providers are putting forth their best efforts to furnish Killer application programs designed for the use of SK Telecom’s SKVM/GVM, KTF’s BREW, and LG Telecom’s KVM on the WIPI 1.1 version. They plan to allow subscribers to use existing wireless content through these terminals by June of this year.
By taking the opportunity to join in this public demonstration of WIPI commercialization, the three mobile communication service providers will enhance their wireless service levels through co-operating with the standard platform that makes their content compatible. This will ultimately allow their subscribers to enjoy a wide variety of open content.
Gi Chul Han, chairman of the KWISF, delivered a welcoming speech to the Public Demonstration and said, "I hope that WIPI will be a new growth engine for the domestic mobile communication industry, and that We can develop it in the global market to make Korea become a future leader in the global wireless platform industry".
There were some doubts about whether WIPI could be successfully positioned in the market. In this regard, directors of three mobile communication service providers commented "This Public Demonstration is designed to officially announce the completion of the Mobile Standard Platform development as well as its commercialization. The three companies pledge their firm determination to cooperate in boosting the use of related applications and content".
On May 14th the three companies laid the groundwork for advancing into the global market by reaching an agreement with Sun Microsystems for co-developing the next version of WIPI and related technologies. They stated, "Through this standard platform, content providers can cut the effort and cost in the development of applications and aid the terminal transplanting program from different platforms".
Each mobile service provider will strive to further develop the wireless platform through constantly improving the standard specifications, and enhancing service quality in order to strengthen the competitiveness of the domestic IT industry. In the future, domestic mobile communication carriers are expected to secure world-class competitiveness, and establish leadership in the global information communication market.
