SK Telecom Holds ’The 2003 Internet Search Contest for Physically Challenged Youth’
2003.06.19 PrintA final match was conducted on the 19th of June 2003 and 246 students (123 teams) from special schools for disabled people across the country participated in the contest.
A total of 130 winners have emerged from the final matches in the 5 years since 1999.
Overseas training programs and scholarships will be awarded to Grand Prize, and Golden Prize winners and their instructors.

On the 19th of June, SK Telecom holds the 2003 Internet Search Contest for physically challenged youth in the Millennium Hall of Central City. In this contest, 246 disabled students (123 teams) from 137 special schools nationwide, will have a chance to demonstrate their skills, and ability to function, in cyber space.

In this contest, disabled students from 137 special schools nationwide, will have a chance to demonstrate their skills, and ability to function, in cyber space.
After two online preliminary screening matches among students of 137 special schools for disabled people throughout the country, 246 students from123 teams were selected to compete in the final match to challenge for "The King of Information Search".
The final match is divided into 4 categories (hearing impairments, physical disabilities, visual disabilities and the mentally-handicapped).
An SK Telecom official said "We made questions with special Braille for visual disabilities teams, and sign language for hearing impairment teams.
We at SK Telecom also prepared large-sized LCD monitors for visual disabilities teams.
About 80 volunteers were helping students demonstrate their skills and ability to compete with one another without being affected by their disabilities".
As a result of the scoring, the company will award a total of 14.2 million won in scholarships to winners of the Grand Prizes (From the Minister of Information and Communication).
Thirteen teams won Gold, Silver, and Bronze Prizes by selecting teams for prizes in the four disability categories.
In addition, overseas training programs will be offered to teachers and winners of the Grand Prize and Golden Prize, and the latest in PCs will be donated to the special schools of winners.
The SK Telecom Internet Search Contest for physically challenged youth has been held for 5 years in a row since the year 1999.
A total of 130 winners have emerged from final matches that involved 1,132 disabled students from the 566 teams that have participated during the 5 years.
The contest is now designated as an official activity sponsored by the Ministry of information and Communication, thereby establishing itself as a crucial information communication activity for disabled youth that helps resolve the digital divide for those people on the margins of society who often become left out of the information loop.
Jung Nam Cho, vice chairman of SK Telecom, commented in his welcoming speech "All of our youth are involved in leading our 21st century information and knowledge-based society.
This should be promoted by both the government and private enterprise. The company hopes every physically challenged student from these 137 special schools nationwide, will have the chance to play an important role in society because we have enhanced their competitiveness, and created a great deal of enthusiasm and interest in developing their potential capabilities".
This contest will be live-broadcast through the Dream Spring program of DNN (www.dnn.or.kr) established in 2002 as Korea’s first Internet broadcasting system for disabled youth.
After the ceremony for the awarding of prizes, a variety of programs will be offered to all participants.
These include piano performances of Hee Ah Lee who is a very famous pianist with four fingers, and a musical performance of "Saeha HOT" by the disabled choir singers, as well as other recreation and entertainment.
