SK Telecom is standing on solid ground for further advancements into global wireless Internet markets.
The excellence of Korean information technology is drawing keen attention in the world’s telecom market, as overseas mobile communications operators adopt our world’s best level Korean wireless Internet technologies.
SK Telecom announced that APBW, a 3G mobile communications service license holder in Taiwan, will launch a wireless Internet service, that adopts the NATE Platform, beginning the 29th of July. This follows Pelephone of Israel that started this service in January of this year.
APBW will provide space-age wireless Internet services, such as a multimedia messaging service, multimedia games, melody, and Picture Mate through a 3rd generation network. In December of 2002, APBW executed a contract to acquire NATE Platforms with SK Telecom that is worth about 30 million US dollars. As a result, SK Telecom has supplied the wireless Internet service operational know-how and technology for such things as, platform design, construction, and maintenance, as well as system integration, and system evaluation, among others. APBW will begin Taiwan’s first 3G network service on July 29th after completing its pilot service last June.
In particular, APBW introduced a 3G wireless Internet multimedia service brand called ’Qma(Quality Multimedia Access)’that has the same concept as SK Telecom’s NATE brand. This brand is expected to create a great sensation in Taiwan’s telecom market.
Pelephone of Israel launched wireless Internet services, such as Character and Bell Sound Provisions, MMS, download type games, etc. in January of this year. The number of service users is currently over 220 thousand. Further, Pelephone introduced a youth targeted brand called ’ESC’(ESCape), which is similar to SK Telecom’s TTL brand. This brand has been gaining great popularity in the market.
SK Telecom, as a leading wireless Internet operator, is actively advancing into the overseas markets by offering the NATE Platform, and it’s service operational know-how that is based on the company’s accumulated service, operational experience, and technological expertise.
SK Telecom exported wireless Internet service packages like MMS and SKVM to Pelephone of Israel, in January of this year, and also supplied NATE Platforms to APBW of Taiwan. Moreover, the company is currently in the process of establishing a Joint Venture company with China Unicom, in order to launch a wireless Internet service in China. These events have proved the excellence and competitiveness of SK Telecom’s wireless Internet technology in the global market.
SK Telecom’s overseas business model using wireless Internet platform licensing, has no investment risk. Another very significant meaning of this is that the company can expect license profitability, and a secure competitive edge in the global competition for wireless Internet technology standardization. At the same time, the company’s overseas activities greatly contribute to our national economy because SK Telecom is advancing into the overseas markets together with domestic wireless terminal and system manufacturers, as well as with solution developers and content providers.
In addition to the Asian and pacific regions, SK Telecom plans to make inroads into the North American, South American, and European markets, where there is a great growth potential for wireless internet expansion. In the future, the company will also strive to export its wireless Internet platform to GSM mobile phone operators in Europe, who are other than CDMA cellular service providers.
APBW was established in June of 2000 by EBT (Eastern Broadband Telecom), a fixed line telephone operator and subsidiary company of Rebar Group which is the fifth largest company in Taiwan. APBW obtained a 3rd generation mobile phone service license in June of 2002, and started providing mobile phone service on the 28th of July 2003.
