Press Release
Will introduce the first cellular handset that applies Standard UI on the 20th of December. This Standard UI was developed under a joint effort with the KAIST
For the first time in the industry in Korea, SK Telecom is trying the User Interface (UI) of cellular handset for solving the customers’ inconveniences due to incompatibility in the menu structure and button usage when customers change to different manufacturers’ cellular handsets.
’Standard UI’ allows customers to easily and conveniently use any kind of cellular handset by unifying the menu structure, its usage and graphics, as well as button applications. This eliminates the problems of handset usage previously encountered by customers who changed handsets to different models, or changed to handsets made by different manufacturers.
On the 20th of December, SK Telecom introduced model LG-SD810SU made by LG Electronics. This is the first cellular handset that applies Standard UI. It was developed after SK Telecom initiated the project of Standard UI development and completed it in November while working under a joint effort with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) since April of this year.
Cellular handset manufacturers, other than LG Electronics, will also produce devices that use SK Telecom’s UI Standard, and new models will be continually introduced into the market. This lets customers quickly and easily change to better cellular handsets in the coming years.
The Standard UI is designed to let every type of customer freely and easily understand and use the device. This includes everyone from beginners who are not accustomed to their use, to teenagers and people in their twenties, who are very good at handset use. These excellent features of Standard UI expand the horizons of value-added service capability. They accomplish this through approaches such as the remarkable function of ’Direct Service Connection’ that allows customers to connect to their choice of service directly through the menu of the handset.
Through mutual cooperative efforts with entities in the academic field, SK Telecom continually puts forth its best efforts toward improving UI Standardization and developing applications that fully satisfy the two most important categories of customers’ desires. These are convenience in usage and the ability to enjoy a variety of handset functions.
The Standard UI was first introduced by SK Telecom as the leading cellular service provider in the Korean telecom industry. However it was already introduced, and widely used overseas, by the world’s prominent mobile communication operators like NTT DoCoMo of Japan, Verizon Wireless and Sprint PCS of the U.S., as well as Vodafone in Europe. Both national and international cellular handset manufacturers apply each service provider’s UI Standard when they export devices.
