SK Telecom Signs MOU with Verizon Wireless of the U.S., for Comprehensive Business Cooperation

On March 22, SK Telecom signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that forms a strategic alliance with Verizon Wireless in the CDMA 1x EV-DO service area. In the MOU, the two companies agree to cooperate in the following areas: * Optimization of CDMA 1x EV-DO, and Research on Smart Phones * Data Roaming Service * International Standardization of Platforms and Applications * VOD (Video-on-Demand), and Coloring Services(a value-added service in Video Phone Services).
The strategic alliance between both companies has great significance because it shows that the largest CDMA service provider in the U.S. has fully recognized the excellence of SK Telecom’s CDMA technology. Verizon Wireless has visited SK Telecom several times and learned the company’s CDMA technology operation know-how since Verizon Wireless officially announced that the launch of EV-DO services in the U.S. will start in 2004. Jin Woo Seo, vice-president and head of SK Telecom’s New Business Group stated, "The business cooperation with Verizon Wireless demonstrates that SK Telecom has global competitiveness in the CDMA and multimedia service areas. This paves the way for advancement into the U.S. market where there is unlimited market potential".
In a recent organizational restructuring SK Telecom established the New Business Group with the aim of strengthening its overseas businesses. This newly launched group will actively carry out service operation businesses in the international markets, as well as NATE platform and Coloring solution exports.
In December 2003, SK Telecom supplied Coloring systems with a capacity of 500 thousand subscribers (worth 1.51 million US dollars) to SMART, the largest mobile phone service provider in the Philippines. The company also signed a contract with SMART to supply Coloring systems with a capacity of 1.5 million subscribers (worth 3 million dollars) on March 17th.
