SK Telecom announced on March 25th that the company has opened the WIPI Era in a full-fledged manner, by launching WIPI 1.2 platform standard-based terminals (LG SD230 / LG SD9230). This is a first in Korea.
The WIPI 1.2 platform has standard features that allow all existing value-added mobile phone services to be offered on a WIPI platform. Traditional standard (WIPI1.0 / WIPI1.1) only allows the value-added services to be interoperable through SK Telecom’s conventional platform called "WITOP".
The launch of WIPI 1.2 platform standard-based terminals will contribute to a boom in WIPI content at an early stage, due to domestic content providers developing a variety of WIPI content while they are still using traditional content. SK Telecom plans to apply the WIPI1.2 standard to all terminals launched in the second half of this year. This will encourage the content providers to develop high-quality WIPI content.
By the second part of 2004, the company will also introduce WIPI2.0 terminals that are 100% compatible with Java. This is accomplished by adopting the Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) that originated from Sun Microsystems. This will accelerate the advancement of domestic platforms and content into the international markets.
The WIPI is a "Mobile Standard Platform" that blends the different mobile standard platforms used by each mobile service provider, into one. The three domestic mobile phone service providers agreed to adopt this platform at the Wireless Internet Forum. SK Telecom commercialized the WIPI1.2 standard in March 2004 by improving the WIPI 1.1 standard functions and conducting platform stabilization tests, for one year. The WIPI1.2 standard obtained recognition from the Telecommunications Technology Association, in February 2003.
Currently there are about 600 types of content for the WIPI. These consist of 400 types of existing WIPI1.1 content, and 200 types of content obtained through a public subscription for WIPI1.2 content held by the Korea Wireless Internet Solution Association.
