Press Release
SK Telecom makes roaming in the U.S. easier
1998.12.29Starts equipment rental service for roaming
Extends international service coverage
Speed 011 users will soon find it more convenient and easier to use SK Telecom’s roaming service in the U.S.
SK Telecom (President: Jung Nam Cho) said that it signed an agreement with Global Signaling Network (GSN), a subsidiary of AT&T Wireless, concerning rental roaming service in the U.S. which becomes effective on December 30, 1998.
The new rental service will make the latest-style Nokia-6101 handsets available for users headed for the U.S. so that they can use them as soon as they arrive at their destination.
The company has provided semi-automatic roaming service available only on analogue handsets since July 1996, but the service requires users to re-enter various user data every time they enter or leave a country and the need to make roaming service available to digital handset users has increased dramatically as the number of users sharply increased.
Thanks to the new service, Speed 011 users will not have to wait for hours to change user data and will be able to use the service only if they apply for the service before their departure as the standby time period will be greatly reduced.
Moreover, because the service is delivered over the AT&T Wireless networks with a nationwide coverage, the call quality and stability will be very high. The service will allow users to use international phone service in all major U.S. cities without calling cards.
Call SK Telecom Roaming Information Center at 3788-3011,2 or the Airport Roaming Center at 666-4244, 4055 or 6011 for SK Telecom’s international roaming service covering 70 nations in the world.
The company said, "Roughly 3,000 customers used our roaming service in the U.S. alone last year and the number is likely to increase," and "For users who applied for semi-automatic roaming service or are using the service at this point, we plan to deliver the same service until the end of the service use."
