Magnolia owns a ’Diversity Technology’ that greatly increases wireless data transmission capacity
SK Telecom secured the exclusive marketing rights for the ’Diversity Technology’ chip set in Asia, thereby creating a new revenue source.
On October 19th, SK Telecom signed a contract forming a strategic affiliation with Magnolia, a venture company in the U.S. which has the world’s best level of wireless communication technologies.
Magnolia owns the ’Diversity Technology’ named ’DiversityPlus’ that greatly increases the wireless data transmission capacity for sending wireless data from cellular phones to base-stations. SK Telecom signed an MOU with Magnolia for jointly developing and marketing these technologies in October of 2003.
’Diversity Technology’ enables a doubling of the data capacity when users are transmitting high-capacity data such as video telephony and multimedia services. As this technology is installed in the cellular phone in the form of a chip, the efficiency of data transmission can increase without altering the existing network infrastructure, or extending the capacity of the network.
If ’Diversity Technology’ is applied, cellular phone call quality increases in ’shadow areas’ such as inside buildings or elevators where the receipt of frequency can easily weaken. In addition, the technology fosters longer battery life by reducing the electric power draw of a cellular phone’s frequency transmission. It also lets users enjoy faster uninterrupted data services.
Through the strategic affiliation contract with Magnolia, SK Telecom obtained the rights of a ’Most-Favorable-Country’ in purchasing the Diversity chip sets. This will give SK Telecom price competitiveness in commercializing the technology. The company also secured the exclusive marketing rights for the chip set in Asia.
The Diversity technology-equipped cellular phones are expected to be commercialized by the second part of 2005.
