SK Telecom Launches EVRC Service
1998.01.21Noise Removing Capability Produces Excellent Sound Quality
30-40% Larger Capacity Than The PCS Mode
SK Telecom(President: Jung Uck Seo) launches the EVRC (Enhanced Variable Rate Coder) service it has commercialized successfully for the first time in the world.
The company announced on January 21 that the service will become available as the manufacturers such as SEC roll out the handsets with the EVRC capability.
EVRC is a new voice encoding method developed to improve QCELP method currently being used in the CDMA system. Because EVRC transmits sound through a highly sophisticated software-based process, it has an excellent noise removing capability and enables near-perfect sound reproduction. It has 30-40% larger capacity than the PCS QCELP(13 Kbps) method and batteries last longer,too.
SK Telecom began to work on the commercialization of the service in 1996 and in October 1997, completed the system application tests.
