’HELIO’ stands for ’Sun’ in the Greek language. It was chosen to take a center in the U.S. mobile communications market.
The existing name of ’SK-EarthLink’ was changed to ’HELIO which is the same name as the new brand in order to break into the new generation market in the U.S. early on.
SK-EarthLink will firmly establish a national sales marketing network starting in November, and also has full-blown plans to start a nationwide commercial service within the first half of 2006.
SK-EarthLink (CEO: Sky Dayton)’ has revealed the new brand name ’HELIO’, and it is in full swing of launching a commercial service. SK-EarthLink is a joint venture company established by SK Telecom and EarthLink (CEO Garry Betty, www.earthlink.net), an Internet service provider in the U.S., in February of 2005 with an initial capitalization of USD 440 million. Each company invested USD 220 million for a 50% equity share of the new company.
Along with this development, the existing name of ’SK-EarthLink’ was changed to ’HELIO (CEO Sky Dayton, www.helio.com)’ which is the same name as the new brand. This name change is aimed at breaking into the new generation market in the U.S. early on with the communication strategy of one brand.
Using ’HELIO’ as a new brand name for the JV makes reference to the meaning of Sun in the Greek language. It was chosen to further the strong goal of establishing a wireless Internet life for the customers of the new generation, as well as helping it become the center of the mobile communication lifestyle.
An SK-EarthLink official revealed that ’HELIO’ will certainly bring about a basic alteration of the voice communication-oriented U.S. mobile communication market through a cutting-edge multimedia content-based 3G wireless internet services, as if Copernicus generated new innovations in the outlook on the world through the Heliocentric Theory which completely went against the worldwide beliefs based on the Geocentric Theory.
