Press Release
use EXIM to complete development of compatibility technology between SK telecom DRM and other DRM in October.
Commercial compatibility launching planned after 3 month connection test and service stabilization period.
SK Telecom announced on August 10 that it would use EXIM(Export/Import), DRM (Digital Rights Management) technology connection standards developed by ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Institute, President Yim Chu-Hwan), to develop technology for compatibility between SK Telecom DRM and other DRM’s by the end of October.
Also, after development of the compatibility technology, SK Telecom will proceed with a three month external connection test and service stabilization period, to launch commercial compatibility with Melon, SK Telecom’s online music service, and other DRM.
The first in the country to begin online music services, as SK Telecom has made a specific determination of when to adopt EXIM developed by ETRI, a state-run research institute, for DRM compatibility, the uncertainty that has surrounded the issue of DRM compatibility has been removed, and a new phase is judged to have been created for renewed development of the domestic digital music market.
"The adoption of inter-connection between different DRM’s is the first of such an example in the world, and we experienced much difficulty in defining the commercialization standards and development details," revealed SK Telecom and ETRI. "In order to shorten the commercialization development period, many people put in much effort to establish a standard during the past two months. As a result, we expect to cut one month from the six month period we expected would be required for final commercialization," added SK Telecom.
EXIM is an inter-DRM connection technology developed by ETRI. EXIM allows inter-compatibility among diverse DRM, and consumers can use purchased contents in various equipments of their choice.
