Press Release
Subscription possible if under 12 years, a new fee plan perfect for elementary school students.
Four free location-based safe services for children also provided.
Nowadays, elementary school students are busier than their mothers and fathers. Parents who feel worried about them being on their own on their way to school, after-school institutes or just outside of the house would like to purchase a cellular phone for them, but feel burdened by the high fees. For them, SK Telecom’s new "Safe Fee Plan for Children" is perfect. It will make them feel a lot better.
On August 21, SK Telecom released its "Safe Fee Plan for Children", a fee plan that is appropriate for the cellular phone usage patterns of children. Children under 12 years of age can subscribe to this "Safe Fee Plan", which is focused on easing the burden parents might feel about their children’s cellular phone fees and also make them secure about where their children are.
The basic fee is KRW 12,500, with 60 minutes of voice call and 100 text messages provided, as well as a "Safe Children Service", an additional location-based service provided free of charge.
In the "Safe Fee Plan for Children", subscribers can select a fee ceiling beforehand - KRW 20,000, KRW 25,000, or KRW 30,000 - to prevent children from indiscriminate usage of their cellular phones. Wireless Internet data usage fees, collect call fees, etc. are not included within the ceiling, but a text message is sent to notify the user and parents through the "data usage fee notification service" as a safety mechanism whenever usage exceeds KRW 20,000, KRW 40,000, KRW 60,000, KRW 80,000, KRW 100,000, and KRW 150,000. When usage has reached the prescribed ceiling, only parents can "re-charge", in units of KRW 20,000.
The most notable feature of this fee plan is the "Safe Children Service", an additional 5-type package service related to the location of the child user. By using the GPS-based location information, information on the location of the child is provided to the parents 8 times a day, in 1 hour intervals ("Automatic Location Notification"); a notification is sent to the parents if the child deviates from a specific region ("Zone Deviation Alarm"); the path of movement of the child is displayed ("Movement Path Display"); and when an emergency situation occurs, 2 people can be paged at the same time ("Emergency Text Paging"), all for free.
Upon subscription to the "Safe Fee Plan for Children", when the child connects to wireless Internet, they are connected to NATE Ting, a wireless website exclusively for teenagers, so that they are exposed to only selected content. Managing Director Ahn Seung-Yoon of SK Telecom’s Business Strategy Department, remarked, "With double-income families, and increased need for children’s safety, the rate of subscription to cellular phone services by elementary school students is increasing, and with the launch of a fee plan equipped with various safety measures, we will commit ourselves to promoting the satisfaction of our customers."
