Signs agreement with the world’s leading media company, Sony Pictures Television International, offering wide-range of video-on-demand (VOD) content
Launches new VOD service through June and NATE, bringing the latest Hollywood movies and television series to customers
(Seoul, 28 January 2008) – SK Telecom (NYSE:SKM) announced today that the company has signed an agreement with Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI), one of the world’s leading media companies, to establish a strategic alliance for content services. Under the agreement, SK Telecom will provide rich video content, including the latest films from Columbia and Tristar and popular TV series from Sony, to customers through the company’s mobile multimedia service platforms, NATE and June.
While a number of popular TV series aired on HBO, such as "Sex and the City" and "Rome," are already available, this new service will further expand SK Telecom’s library of video content, offering Hollywood blockbusters such as "Spider-Man 3," the "Da Vinci Code" and other TV series such as "The Tudors".
Under this agreement, SK Telecom is now the first mobile carrier in Korea to offer full-length Hollywood blockbuster movies from one of the six largest film studios in the world. These partnerships enable SK Telecom to provide more diversified content services, including foreign movies and dramas, on top of local programs and films which are currently being offered. In line with the significant advancements made in wireless Internet services and in its network, SK Telecom has the capability to provide more sophisticated video content services via mobile phones.
Movie and TV series content fees are expected to range between KRW 1,000 to 2,000. Customers will also be charged with additional data communication fees unless they are subscribing to a flat-rate wireless Internet plan.
"As mobile technology evolves, the culture of mobile video consumption will continue to rapidly change, encouraging more customers to watch movies and dramas on their mobile phones. We will continue to expand our partnerships with media companies to enrich mobile-based video content services," said Soo Hyeok Lee, Vice President of Culture & Life Business Division at SK Telecom.
