Seoul, Korea, 16 May 2009 – SK Telecom (NYSE:SKM) announced its plans to participate in the "World IT Show 2009 (or WIS 2009)," to be held from June 17 to 20. At the exhibition, the company will take visitors on a journey through the 25-year history of the Korean mobile telecommunications and offer them a glimpse into the future by showcasing the past, present and future mobile technologies.
As the leading force in the Korean mobile telecommunications industry, SK Telecom proudly becomes the only attendant to operate an exhibition hall created under the theme of "The History of Korean Mobile Telecommunications," besides having its own corporate exhibition hall.
This theme-based exhibition hall consists of 15 booths, showing rare items such as early carphones and mobile phones the company provided back in 1984 when mobile telecommunication service was first introduced to Korea.
SK telecom also set up a touch screen kiosk to provide information on mobile telecommunications. With a simple touch on the screen, visitors can view mobile phones that have been released over the last 25 years. Moreover, to make the tour more interesting, the company displays an early carphone installed in a 1980’s vehicle "Panther Calista." A photo zone created in front of the vehicle is expected to become a popular spot for visitors.
SK Telecom’s corporate exhibition hall, made up of 80 booths, is built on the idea that the development of mobile telecommunications technology improves industrial efficiencies by reducing energy consumption, thereby contributing to green growth.
The company set up a booth where visitors can experience various Wibro (Mobile WiMAX)-based services, learning how Wibro can be combined with other fields and industries such as medical service and public works to improve industrial efficiencies. Furthermore, "Mobile In Vehicle (MIV)," a service that received favorable reception at the Auto Shanghai 2009, will be demonstrated for the first time in Korea.
SK Telecom chose an environmentally-friendly concept, "Green," as the overall theme of the exhibition and created booths showcasing Green Network, Green Office, Green Technology, and Green Campaign.
The Green Technology booth displays remote meter reading system, streetlight control and management system as well as a sensor-based service that checks the safety of bridges; and the Green Office booth shows "ZPack, " that allows users to pre-set programs via a USB-like device, which can then be connected to any computer so as to create a user-tailored environment. The Green Campaign booth is set up to collect used mobile phones. The company, together with the Beautiful Foundation, gives a small gift to those who dispose their used handsets at the booth. In addition, when the exhibition closes, SK Telecom plans to donate flooring material and cloths it used to decorate the exhibition halls to the Beautiful Foundation so that they can be sold or recycled.
Oh-Yong Kwon, Executive Vice President and Head of PR Office said, "SK Telecom will take this opportunity to showcase "Green IT," which enhances efficiency in both living and industrial environment by combining SK Telecom’s technology and service with other industries. At the same time we will show the world how SK Telecom has grown to become a global ICT leader, writing the proud history of the Korean mobile telecommunications industry over the last 25 years."
