First Korean CSR case to be published by Harvard Business School
Introduces evolution of CSR strategies and organizational change that aligns with business strategy
Recognized for its sustainability management activities including ethics management, environmental management, win-win management, customer protection efforts and social contribution activities
To be utilized as teaching material at Harvard Business School beginning in the Fall semester of 2009
Seoul, Korea, 7 September 2009 – SK Telecom (NYSE:SKM) announced that its efforts in corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been published as a Harvard Business School (HBS) case study to be used as teaching material for MBA students.
HBS, through its ’Case Method,’ seeks to introduce its students with exemplary business activities from various corporations that have educational value. Under the sponsorship of an HBS faculty member, HBS publishes case studies to provide material for an in-depth class discussion and debate on a certain topic. This is SK Group’s second case study published by HBS following SK Communications’ Cyworld case study last year.
The case study, titled ’SK Telecom: Pursuing Happiness through Corporate Social Responsibility,’ traces the footsteps of SK Telecom’s CSR efforts pursued under the philosophy embedded in the SK Group Management System (SKMS) to ’pursue happiness.’ With this case study, SK Telecom becomes the first Korean enterprise to be published in an HBS Case Study in the field of CSR.
The case shows how SK Telecom’s CSR initiatives have evolved over the last decade: Starting out in the form of social contribution activities where employees engaged in volunteer work and services such as mobile missing persons search were provided, and then expanding its scale and reach to realize corporate sustainability management via ethical management, environmental management, win-win management, customer protection efforts and corporate community engagement activities. Also highlighted in the case study was how SK Telecom exercised leadership by focusing on the alignment of CSR activities with its corporate business strategy, and organizational structure.
In particular, the case describes in detail a CSR-dedicated unit that was created earlier this year and how it is actively promoting the company’s corporate citizenship home and abroad, thus contributing to the testimony of SK Telecom’s strong commitment to deliver happiness by systematically resolving societal issues and with a long-term perspective.
SK Telecom commented that the case study serves as an opportunity to introduce the company’s CSR on-going evolution to next-generation business leaders and hope to share this valuable experience by having this case utilized as an educational material and benchmarked by professional schools and research institutes around the world that study corporate citizenship. Aside from HBS, other professional schools in countries such as Hong Kong and Singapore have already expressed interested in using the case as teaching material for their classes.
SK Telecom’s Executive Vice President Young-Chan Nam said, "CSR activity is a critical factor in realizing corporate sustainability management and its importance is increasing rapidly worldwide. The fact that SK Telecom’s CSR activity was selected as an HBS Case Study is not only an honor to the company’s CSR evolution, but also serves as another testimony to the continuing growth of corporate citizenship in Korea."
