T Map is the top mobile navigation service in Korea with 17 million users (11.6 million monthly active users). Launched in 2002, T Map has constantly developed/applied ground-breaking technologies to move beyond its role of providing optimal route guidance to reach its ultimate vision of creating the safest environment for drivers.
T Map has integrated SK Telecom’s AI platform NUGU in September 2017 to enhance drivers’ safety by minimizing distractions. Powered by NUGU, T Map allows users to control its features via voice commands. For instance, users can set/change destinations, initiate/end a voice call, send/receive text messages, receive news/weather/sports information, search for popular restaurants, and even order coffee without ever having to take their eyes off the roads or hands off the wheel.
Moreover, with the application of V2X technology in February 2018, T Map helps prevent traffic accidents by notifying drivers, in advance, of potential dangerous situations. For instance, upon detecting hard braking of vehicles GPS information and big data, it sends out warning signs to T Map screens of drivers in following vehicles to prevent collision/ secondary crashes within 0.1 second. In addition, when emergency vehicles are dispatched to an accident scene, drivers travelling on the same estimated route receives notifications in advance to give way to the emergency vehicles.
To date, T Map has sent out an average of 100,000 warnings to users per month to prevent primary and secondary accidents. Recognized for its technological strength in V2X, SK Telecom has received the ‘Minister of Science and ICT Award’ at the 18th Mobile Technology Awards held in Korea in December 2018.
“SK Telecom is honored to receive this award as it recognizes our efforts to enhance driving safety and social value by applying innovative technologies such as AI and V2X,” said Park Jin-hyo, Chief Technology Officer of SK Telecom. “We will continue to develop leading-edge technologies to realize a safe autonomous driving environment in this era of 5G.”
