SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM) announced today that it has been named the winner of seven categories at this year’s Telecom Asia Awards*, including ‘Best Mobile Carrier’ and ‘Most Innovative 5G Use Case’.

*Telecom Asia Awards is the region’s longest-running award for the telecoms industry, hosted by Asia's largest regional telecommunications and IT media, Telecom Asia.

SK Telecom received the ‘Best Mobile Carrier’ award for the development of innovative 5G technologies and world’s first deployment of 5G network that not only provides the fastest speed and widest coverage, but also offers the highest level of security through the application of quantum cryptography technologies.

Moreover, the company’s 5G Smart Factory won the ‘Most Innovative 5G Use Case’ award. On December 1, 2018, SK Telecom has successfully commercialized 5G network. On the same day, the company has realized the world’s first 5G-based smart factory environment for its first enterprise customer Myunghwa Industry, an auto parts company in Korea. By applying its 5G smart factory solution named ‘5G-AI Machine Vision,’ SK Telecom has brought revolutionary changes to the auto parts maker’s manufacturing environment.

SK Telecom’s Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) technology received the ‘Most Innovative Network Transformation Initiative’ award. The installment of MEC-based small-scale data centers at 5G base stations or routers can reduce latency by up to 60 percent. Amid fierce competition, the company has also won awards for its AI-assisted network operation systems TANGO and T-CORE, as well as its Carrier SDN & NaaS Platform built with network virtualization technologies.

As for services, SK Telecom’s ‘oksusu Social VR’ and ‘Living Fairytale’, which operate on an AR/VR platform called ‘T Real’, won awards in the ‘Most Innovative OTT Video Service’ and ‘Most Innovative Video Service’ categories, respectively.
