Discussions center on next-generation network (All IP) configurations .
SK Telecom held the Mobile Wireless Internet Forum (MWIF) at the Sheraton Walker Hill Hole in central Seoul April 4-6. A total of 43 domestic and foreign telecommunications operators and IT equipment manufacturers took part, including Vodafone and Cisco Systems. The MWIF was established in San Jose, California in January 2000, and its membership from Korea includes SK Telecom, Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Electronics (Hynix) and LG Electronics.
The MWIF Technical Committee meets four times a year. This influential body is working to ways to unify next-generation mobile networks into a standard know as ?All IP.? Currently, wireless technology for the future is divided into two camps, 3GPP(1) (asynchronous standard) and 3GPP2(2) (synchronous standard).
At the Seoul meeting, the participants were divided into seven groups, which centered their discussions on how to standardize networks for specific next-generation mobile services. The agenda also included the RAN structure between base stations and switching systems and the issue of compatibility among networks.
According to SK Telecom Managing Director Lee Myung-Sung, who serves on the MWIF Board of Directors, ?The Seoul MWIF meeting serves as an opportunity for SK Telecom and Other Korean companies to become involved in the standardization of wireless Internet services and have their voices heard in the process.? He added, ?SK Telecom, as the world?s largest CDMA service operator, can assert its leadership at the meeting.?
