The same wireless handset can be used in both Korea and Japan to place and receive calls.
Users pay only the call charge; no subscription fee or monthly service charge is imposed
SK Telecom and KDDI of Japan concluded an automated roaming service agreement at the SK Telecom Seoul Head Office on April 19. The service allows SK Telecom 011 cellular service subscribers to use their cellular phone when they visit Japan.
SK Telecom began a similar service with NTT DoCoMO last November, so the latest agreement will give Korean users two Japanese operators to choose from.
From May, KDDI subscribers will have access to the SK Telecom network in Korea. SK Telecom will offer the same roaming service for Korean customers in Japan next year, after the company comes out with a new handset.
Importantly, the automated roaming service is much more economical than conventional roaming services. Users are not burdened with additional subscription fees (either initial or monthly). They only pay the call itself.
It will cost 84 yen (about 898 won) a minute to place a call inside Japan and 259 yen (about 2,773 won) a minute to call from Japan to Korea. Local calls received in Japan will cost 55 yen (about 590 won) a minute.
