There was an increase of 250,000 cellular phone subscribers over the second quarter, while the company?s average revenue per user (ARPU) increased 1,634 won.
On November 7, SK Telecom(www.sktelecom.com) announced that the company achieved a net income of 290 billion won and total sales of 1.6 trillion won for the third quarter of 2001.
SK Teleocm?s total sales for the third quarter of 2001 reached 1.601 trillion won, showing more than a 100 billion won increase from the 1.494 trillion won in total sales for the second quarter of 2001
The total number of cellular phone subscriber?s as of the end of September 2001 was 11.16 million, up 250 thousand subscribers from the 10.91 million cellular phone subscribers at the end of June 2001. Furthermore, thanks to the increased volume of value-added services, including wireless Internet use, the company?s ARPU as of September recorded 48,308 won, increasing 1,634 won over the June figure. These are the important factors in explaining the increase of total sales for the third quarter of 2001.
Taking a look at SK Telecom?s third quarter business results compared to those in the second quarter, we see that the operating income reached 668 billion won, increasing 229 billion won over the 439 billion won for the second quarter. Operating expenses totaled 933 billion won, decreasing 122 billion won from the 1.055 trillion won recorded for the second quarter. This resulted in a net income of 291 billion won, an increase of 58 billion won over the 233 billion won for the second quarter.
In particular, SK Telecom?s wireless Internet service area is emerging as a new sales force in its mobile communications business. Wireless Internet service sales from the first quarter to the third quarter of 2001 skyrocketed to 171 billion won, up 90% from the 90 billion won achieved in the same period a year ago.
In accordance with the company?s announcement, Even though operating income greatly increased, net income only increased 25%. This was because SK Telecom had to include income tax payments in the third quarter of 2001 in accordance with the tax laws. The company?s income tax had been deducted since 1999 because SK Telecom is a major shareholder of SK Shinsegi Telecom as a result of SK Telecom?s acquisition of a majority stake in Shinsegi Telecom.
SK Shinsegi Telecom achieved net income of 40 billion won and total sales of 589 billion won for the third quarter of 2001. Taking a look at the company?s accumulated business results from the first quarter to the third quarter of 2001, total sales recorded 1.469 trillion won, while net income reached 113 billion won.
