Has acquired final approval for the establishment of a joint venture company with China Unicom
Introduces in the middle of this month, a wireless Internet service under the brand name of ’U Jok-Bu-Rak’
On February 6th, SK Telecom announced the granting of final approval by the Chinese government, for the establishment of a joint venture company with China Unicom. The middle of this month, the joint venture company, ’UNISK Information Technology Co., Ltd. (UNISK)’, will launch a wireless Internet service, under the brand name of ’U Jok-Bu-Rak,’ in China.
UNISK is China’s first joint venture telecom service provider that operates with both foreign and national companies. It will become the first separate wireless portal service provider in China. UNISK was capitalized at 6 million US dollars. SK Telecom owns 49% of the joint venture company’s equity share, and China Unicom has a 51% share.
The UNISK’s board of directors consists of two members from SK Telecom and three members from China Unicom. Its representative director is Shangbing, vice-chairman of China Unicom, and president of the company is Sue Hyuk Lee, vice-president of SK Telecom. SK Telecom had already been building a wireless portal service system prior to the acquisition of the UNISK business license. By the middle of February, UNISK will start to introduce the wireless Internet service under the brand name of ’U Jok-Bu-Rak’, to China Unicom’s 19 million CDMA cellular users.
’U Jok-Bu-Rak’ stands for the community of young elites who pursue joy, pleasure, and happiness through the wireless Internet. UNISK will first offer wireless application protocol-based portal services such as Picture Mate, Bell Sound, Games, Chatting, Horoscope, etc. And then, the company plans to launch BREW and JAVA-based services by the second quarter of this year.
SK Telecom expects great consumer interest in ’U Jok-Bu-Rak’, because China Unicom’s cellular customers can easily access the service through their handsets. In addition, the U Jok-Bu-Rak’s multimedia and mobile commerce services are expected to lead a positive change in China’s wireless Internet market.
SK Telecom plans to offer differentiated services in cooperative efforts with domestic wireless Internet solution developers and content providers such as Neomtel, Danal, Mobile-on, Cynet, Yaho, Mdata, Widerthan.Com, and U-angel. SK Telecom will also provide these domestic companies, the opportunity to jointly advance into China’s telecom market.
There are over 300 million cellular users in the China’s telecom market. This makes it the largest in the world. A variety of multimedia-based wireless Internet services are being developed in this market. This goes far beyond simple cellular usage patterns based on voice and short message exchange. As a result, the number of wireless Internet users is expected to reach 10 million by the end of 2004.
In March 2003, SK Telecom signed a contract with China Unicom that establishes the joint venture company in China. Since then, both companies have been carrying out system construction and administrative work in preparation for the launch of the wireless Internet service in the Chinese market.
