SK Telecom, AhnLab Uniware, and AhnLab Successfully Develop A Virus Vaccine for WIPI-based Mobile Phones for the First Time in the World
2004.06.21 PrintAllows the building of a secure service infrastructure in a wireless Internet environment
Developed a world-class wireless security technology that enhances Korea’s national competitiveness in the global market
Customers can install the V3Mobile vaccine in all WIPI terminals launched after the third quarter of this year.
SK Telecom announced on June 21st that the company has successfully developed the world’s first virus vaccine, dubbed the V3Mobile. This was accomplished in a cooperative effort with AhnLab and its affiliate AhnLab Uniware. This new concept in virus protection shields cell phones based on wireless Internet protocol interoperability (WIPI) from mobile viruses. In addition to the development of the V3Mobile vaccine, the three companies jointly developed a WITOP-based vaccine for mobile viruses in February 2003.
In developing the V3Mobile vaccine, SK Telecom was in charge of the wireless Internet protocol interoperability technology, and AhnLab Uniware took charge of the wireless security technology area. In addition, AhnLab focused on the mobile vaccine engine technology area.
The V3Mobile vaccine program enables users to check for a virus in their cellular phones, and to detect any virus in download files in real-time while accessing the Internet on the go through mobile terminals. It also offers the basic vaccine functions that are provided by conventional PCs. These include a vaccine engine update function as well as a virus check-up record management function. Moreover, this program furnishes a virus reporting function that lets users directly request the analysis of files in mobile terminals that might be infected by a virus. Due to this breakthrough, SK Telecom is able to build a secure service infrastructure in a wireless Internet environment. AhnLab and AhnLab Uniware will have strong competitiveness in the global mobile security market through their vaccine technology for mobile terminals, the wireless security technology, and the application technology.
Sul Won Hee, vice-president and head of the SK Telecom Platform Research Center said, " In this convergence environment between different industries the use of mobile phones is in great demand and the importance of mobile security is increased. The development of V3Mobile will contribute greatly to the offering of a more secure and stable mobile service environment through the enhancement of terminal platform security. SK Telecom has developed a world-class wireless security technology that enhances our national competitiveness in the global market" he added.
SK Telecom plans to commercialize the V3Mobile program by the third quarter of this year. Customers will be able to use this service by downloading the software program on conventional WIPI phones.
